The Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo picked its grand champion on Friday.

The more than 1,400 cattle that entered show competitions were narrowed down to six champions with a shot at the grand title.

"This has been our lifelong goal, and to do it with one that we raised by ourselves, it makes it even better -- it just adds to the excitement," winner 12-year-old Stock Martin said.

Martin, of Hereford, was excited and a bit shocked, too, taking a deep breath in the moments after being declared the winner.

"I was at a loss of words for it," he said. "It's just the most exciting feeling that you'll ever feel in your life."

Stock's 7-month-old European Cross steer, who is aptly named "Lunchbox," was along for the ride.

Lunchbox stood out to judge Dr. Mark Johnson, who said the steer was an example of what cattle bred to eat should look like.

Lunchbox was born a month premature but, even then, the steer always looked good, Martin said.

"We knew we had a good one when he was born, so me and Dad thought, 'Well, everybody at the show might as well pack their lunch, because we've got one that'll get 'em.'"

Parents Brian and Sherri Martin said they were proud of their son but were in a bit of disbelief themselves in the minutes after the announcement.

"It's unbelievable -- pinch us," Sherri Martin said. "We still -- it's hard to believe that it's real."

Lunchbox is now headed to the auction block.

Last year's grand champion took home $230,000, but no one was willing to say how much they think this year's champ will go for on Saturday.

Whatever the dollar amount, Stock Martin already has plans for it.

"Put it back into college and then buy more steers, maybe win some more shows," he said.

It's not a bad idea, because he's already won the show of a lifetime.

"It's everything you want," he said.

Martin also won grand champion at the State Fair of Texas last fall. And last year, he won grand reserve champion with a different steer.

The auction gets under way at 9 a.m. on Saturday, the final day of the Stock Show.

Lawmaker Aims to Modify Texas' Castle Doctrine

Omar Villafranca, NBC 5 News

The Castle Doctrine allows homeowners to protect themselves if someone is threatening their home or property, but one lawmaker says your car isn't your castle and wants to change the law.

Lawyers and lawmakers met in Dallas on Friday to discuss the state's stand-your-ground laws.

The meeting was part of a larger meeting put together by the American Bar Association at the Hilton Anatole in Dallas.

State Sen. Royce West, D-Dallas, said he favors reviewing the state's stand-your-ground laws. West added that he favors reviewing all laws after they've been implemented.

But state Rep. Garnet Coleman, of Houston, said he's ready to change part of the law.

"The idea is, if you're threatened in your home, you should be able to use force," he said. "But if you're threatened on the street, the Castle Doctrine was never designed to say that anybody anywhere, if they perceive they've been threatened, can shoot someone."

The Castle Doctrine states that "a person is justified in using force and in some instances, deadly force to repel an aggressor." The law applies in a person's home and even at a place of work or in someone's car.

But the language of the law is too subjective, Coleman said.

"This is where people's prejudices and their thoughts come in," he said. "This is very subjective, and that is one of the challenges with the law. It's too subjective. If you look at who's been harmed, it's mostly people of color."

Coleman said he also thinks the law should only refer to incidents in a home.

"The thought that your car is your castle, and the thought that a parking lot is your castle, and the thought that the public street is your castle -- it is not," he said.

The bill hasn't been filed yet, but Coleman plans to file it this session.

Arlington ISD Opens Nearly All Schools to Transfers

advertisement

The Arlington Independent School District approved a measure on Thursday that allows any student to attend any school in the district.

Parents will be allowed to apply for a transfer as early as March 2. Arlington ISD spokesperson Amy Casas said most reasonable requests will be granted, assuming the desired school is not full.

"A lot of times it's because [parents] work closer to that school or they like a certain teacher – whatever their reason may be for wanting to transfer," said Casas. "But we're not going to overburden the school with additional students, or add portables to accommodate additional students, or add staffing to accommodate additional students."

Students within Arlington ISD boundaries will have first choice at open school slots. If a school is full, students will be waitlisted.

Those beyond Arlington ISD boundaries will also be eligible to transfer into the district; however, those students will automatically be waitlisted until students who live inside district boundaries are placed.

When considering whether to grant students permission to transfer, Casas said the district will consider such things as that student's academic performance, disciplinary record and attendance trends.

Arlington ISD has also changed the cost of transferring. In the past, students who wanted to transfer into the district from another school district had to pay a nearly $2,000 tuition. Now, if approved, out-of-district transfers will have to pay a $100 fee.

Students attempting to transfer within the district during the month of March face a $65 fee. After March the fee jumps to $100.

Most parents say having the choice is worth the price of admission.

"If you're in an area that's not a good area or the expectations are low, you can go to a better school," said Donna Olszewski, an Arlington mother. "The level of expectation from the parent for the school goes up, they're not stuck with what [other schools] were offering before and [schools will] start to compete. I think that competition will be good for the education of the children."

Mary Powell said she thinks parents should have the choice, but worries that there will be a drain on poor performing schools.

"I think it hurts the poorer schools, the poorer performing schools because of course everyone is going to want to go to the better schools. But parents want the best education for their children – we all do," said Powell.

But Casas played down the idea that there will be a mass exodus from certain schools.

"It usually balances out," said Casas. "We haven't really had a school where you've seen a dramatic drop in students going to that school."

Parent Kevin Stokes said he is concerned about the potential impact on high school athletics.

"[Schools] are going to overload on players and you're just going to have one school dominate the district. That's not fair," said Stokes.

Although students will not be allowed to transfer just on the basis of sports, those who play high school sports will be allowed to transfer for other reasonable reasons. Casas said athletes who are granted permission to transfer will have to sit out of their respective sport for one year "while they establish residency in their new school" that abides by University Interscholastic League regulations.

Every school in the district will be open for transfer with the exception of Adams, Atherton, Hale and Johns elementary schools, as they work on balancing out their school populations.

Arlington ISD is expecting a run on schools. The district will allow parents to camp out at the district offices in the days leading up to March 2, when the district begins taking transfer applications.

All applications will be served on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Parents wishing to camp out will be required to purchase a $50 permit.

Even at 89 years old, Rep. Ralph Hall is still trying to keep up with what all the kids are doing.

"First thing — the name fascinates me. Twitter — where did they get that?" he said.

The Texas congressman is the oldest serving member of the House of Representatives in recorded history.

"All I know is, I want to get to my people, reach my people, reach the young people," Hall said. "You can say an awful lot in two sentences to let people know how you voted or why you voted, how you voted or what you're going to do or where you're going to be next week. I think it will be helpful."

In his first tweet, Hall used the handle @RalphHallPress to reminisce about the past, wishing former President Ronald Reagan happy birthday on what would have been his 102nd birthday.

"I did work with him, and he was a great, great president," Hall said. "He was a great guy, and I was very fond of him."

Hall, who said keeping things at 140 characters or less is growing on him, said he plans to become an expert at tweeting.

Hall is the last member of the state's congressional delegation to join the social network. He represents Texas District 4, which includes parts of North Texas that include Rockwall, Sherman and Paris.

Family, Friends Say Goodbye to Chad Littlefield

Family and friends of Chad Littlefield are saying goodby in Midlothian Friday. Littlefield was killed, along with Chris Kyle, at a North Texas gun range last weekend.

Family, Friends to Say Goodbye to Gun Range Victim

Family and friends will say goodbye on Friday to a husband and father gunned down at a shooting range last weekend.

More Photos and Videos

Family and friends said goodbye on Friday to a husband and father who was gunned down at a shooting range last weekend.

Funeral services were held for Chad Littlefield at the First Baptist Church in Midlothian on Friday afternoon.

Littlefield and best-selling author and former Navy SEAL Chris Kyle were shot to death at a Glen Rose gun range on Saturday. Eddie Ray Routh, a Marine reservist, has been charged in their deaths.

Friends described Littlefield as a hard-working, fun-loving and dependable friend, father and husband.

Kenny Lowman, First Baptist Church pastor, said he has known Littlefield's wife, Leanne, for 20 years and officiated their wedding.

"He loved the Lord, was a great friend to many and lived a life worthy of following," he said.

"All week long, we've probably received more calls than at any other time in the history of our church, and it really is a testament to the Littlefield family and the Kyle family, their impact on this community," said Michael Nichols, the church's executive pastor.

The high school baseball team of Littlefield's nephew showed up in uniform.

"It's very devastating," Palmer High School baseball coach Rusty Blankenship said. "It reaches everywhere. We're a small town in Palmer where everybody knows everybody, and it's just very important for us to be there for him."

Pam Harris, who is close friends with his parents, said they have been strong in dealing with their son's shocking death.

"You couldn't love a son any more -- just terrific people," she said.

An estimated 200 Patriot Guard riders escorted the family to Mount Zion Cemetery for a private burial.

The group usually attends funerals for military veterans and service members but made a rare exception. A Patriot Guard rider who was friends with Littlefield said they wanted to honor him for trying to a veteran when he was killed.

"When the spouse had asked -- even though Chad was not in the military -- if we could be here, how could you say no?" Patriot Guard ride captain Carlton Emmons said.

Littlefield, who would have turned 36 on Monday, is survived by his wife and daughter.

He and Kyle were at the Rough Creek Lodge gun range on Saturday to help Eddie Ray Routh, a veteran and Marine reservist. Routh's family says he was struggling with post-traumatic stress disorder.

Investigators say Routh shot Littlefield and Kyle multiple times at the gun range.

Routh's brother-in-law told police the day of the shooting that Routh said he killed two people while out shooting target practice because "he couldn't trust them so he killed them before they could kill him," according to a Texas Ranger search warrant. The brother-in-law told police that Routh said he couldn't trust anyone and that everyone was out to get him, according to the document.

Arlington police are anticipating anywhere from 5,000 to 15,000 people for Monday's memorial service at Cowboys Stadium for former Navy SEAL sniper Chris Kyle.

As NBC 5 first reported, Kyle will be buried at the Texas State Cemetery in Austin. On Tuesday, a 200-mile procession is planned for when Kyle makes his way to his final resting place.

A trust fund for the families of both victims has been established. The public can make donations at the website of Kyle's company, Craft International.

Editor's Note: A previous version of this story incorrectly attributed statements Eddie Ray Routh allegedly made to his brother-in-law as statements that he made to detectives. NBC 5 regrets the error.

Firefighters battled a fire at a home in the 1000 block of Pheasant Ridge Drive in Grapevine Thursday afternoon.

Chopper 5 could see flames jumping from the roof as firefighters doused the fire with water from a ladder truck and in a ground attack.

NBC 5 crews heading to the scene said they could see smoke from several miles away.

A firefighter was injured while battling the flames. Grapevine Fire Chief Steve Bass said he fell off the roof, he was taken to the hospital but NBC 5 was told his injuries are not serious and he'll be "just fine."

Firefighters from several neighboring cities, including Bedford, are helping fight the fire.

Approximately 20 engines and 65 firefighters were called out because the fire was so intense according to Chief Bass.

Crews doused two nearby homes with water because they were in danger because of the heavy flames.

No word what sparked the fire and Bass said firefighters haven't had a chance to do an  initial search inside the home.

As of 5:45 p.m. the majority of the fire had been knocked down according to Chief Bass.

A Fort Worth officer who was shot three times last week in Haltom City by a drug suspect left the hospital Thursday afternoon.

Officer John Bell was shot in the right eye socket, right hip joint and left hand on Jan. 29 while assisting Haltom City police.

Dozens of Bell's colleagues stood at attention outside Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital and clapped and cheered as he got into his car with his wife, Barbara.

"A whole lot's been made out of this, and I'm really humbled by it," Bell said minutes after he was discharged. "Everybody's so nice and saying, 'You're a hero.' I don't really consider myself that."

Doctors say they are not sure if Bell will be able to see out of his right eye again but say he was "very lucky."

"Had that bullet entered his brain through his eye socket, he would have likely had a fatal injury," said Dr. David Smith, director of trauma.

"The good Lord was looking after me, obviously -- probably got a plan for me somewhere down the road," Bell said.

Bell said he was aware of what was going on after he was shot and rushed to the hospital. He said he kept telling himself to hang in there.

"You tell yourself, 'You're OK; you're breathing; you're OK. I'm going to be all right. I've got the best people in the world taking care of me.' It doesn't get any better than that," he said.

Bell, a 21-year veteran and motorcycle officer, was shot while helping Haltom City police who were searching for a man they tried to pull over during a narcotics investigation.

Investigators said Cody Loron, 32, shot Bell after the officer found him hiding in a truck. Bell returned fire.

Loron was shot and died at a Fort Worth hospital the next day.

The case is still under investigation.

An 8-year-old boy is recovering at home with a broken knee, after he was hit by car Thursday afternoon in Fort Worth.

It happened shortly after four o'clock in the 5800 block of Kilpatrick Avenue. Fort Worth police tell NBC 5 that the vehicle that hit the boy was fleeing the scene of a shooting.

The boy, Samuel McNeal, told NBC 5 he never saw the car coming.

"I was walking home from school. I was almost to my house.  And a big old car came and hit my leg," McNeal said, moments after arriving home from the hospital.

Neither he nor his mother, Broshundrick McNeal, knew at the time of the crash that the driver, a woman whose name has not yet been released, had been driving away from the scene of an argument that led to gunshots.

Fort Worth police had been investigating a report of the shooting nearby, in the area of Camp Bowie Boulevard, when the report of the crash was made, according to Officer Sharron Neal.

The argument reportedly involved two men fighting over the driver, Officer Neal said.  One of the men pulled out a gun and fired at the other man, before the shooter hopped into the car with the woman and they sped off, according to Officer Neal.

After dropping off the shooter, the woman continued on to Kilpatrick. Officer Neal said the driver may have been driving recklessly and talking on a cellphone when she hit the boy.

The impact of the crash knocked one of the boy's shoes off, according to a witness.

The driver stopped and got out of the vehicle, police said.

When officers arrived they recognized her vehicle from the report of shooting report in the area. The woman was arrested on outstanding warrants, Officer Neal said. The details of those warrants have not been released.

There were multiple meetings Thursday with different law enforcement agencies to coordinate the massive public memorial.

Doors will open at 11:30 a.m. for the 1 p.m. service. Parking is free at Lots 1, 2, and 10, closest to Randol Mill Road and North Collins Street. Attendees can enter through gates A and K on the north side of the stadium.

Cameras, bags, purses and other substantial handheld items will not be allowed in for security reasons.

Kyle's family has asked that no one take pictures at the service.

On Tuesday, a 200-mile procession is planned as Kyle makes his way to his final resisting place.

As NBC 5 first reported, Kyle will be buried at the Texas State Cemetery in Austin.

A motorcycle procession will leave Midlothian by 8 a.m. and take U.S. Route 287 to Interstate 35 into Austin.

Jobs Program Sways Dead Man’s Curve Replacement Critics

Written By Unknown on Kamis, 07 Februari 2013 | 19.31

advertisement

A new job-training program unveiled Wednesday swayed critics of the Dallas plan to remove the S.M. Wright Freeway and the notorious "Dead Man's Curve."

Crashes are common at the curve where U.S. Highway 175 C.F Hawn Freeway becomes S.M. Wright Freeway heading north to Downtown Dallas.

The Texas Department of Transportation plans to remove the curve by extending the C.F. Hawn Freeway to the west, linking 175 directly to I-45, diverting 175 traffic from the S.M. Wright Freeway.

Years of debate have centered on the next phase of the plan, which will demolish the 10-lane S.M. Wright Freeway and replace it with a six-lane surface street through South Dallas.

Some critics wanted a four-lane street, concerned that even the six-lane road would carry too much traffic.

"What we were concerned with was economic development and the opportunity for the redevelopment of South Dallas," said Rev. Gerald Britt, a community leader.

But Britt attended the City Hall press conference Wednesday where South Dallas City Councilmember Carolyn Davis unveiled the job training plan.

The program will focus on training workers from South Dallas, with $2.5 million in money normally reserved for road construction.

"It started in this area because there's a workforce out here that needs to be tapped into, there's a contracting element that needs to be increased," said Bill Hale, Texas Department of Transportation Dallas District Chief Engineer.

Hale said transportation officials in other Texas cities are now studying the Dallas job-training plan.

"Tell everybody in Austin, we want to make this so successful that everybody through out the state is going to be doing it," Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings said.

Some existing South Dallas business people are still not sold on the S.M. Wright reconstruction.

Rick Svay owns Texas Liquor on S.M. Wright near Hatcher.  He counts on the heavy freeway traffic.

"If you have no traffic, you have no business," he said.

Svay believes the existing roadway is just fine and doubts removing it will improve the aging neighborhood.

"Why not use that money to renovate it instead of tear it down," he said.

Construction to eliminate Dead Man's Curve is set to begin in early 2014 with the S.M. Wright demolition to follow in 2017.

The job training program is gearing up now.

Texas College Students Could Soon Pack Heat

advertisement

Students with concealed handgun licenses could soon carry guns on Texas college campuses.

More than a dozen state senators have signed on to Senate Bill 182, also known as the  "Campus Personal Protection Act."

The bill's primary author, Senator Brian Birdwell, said the bill is about preserving the 2nd Amendment.

"This affords CHL holders, one of the most lawful group of citizens in our state, to be able exercise that 2nd amendment right to go on to the campus of higher learning to be able defend themselves and protect their right to self-preservation, God forbid, some act of evil be perpetrated," Birdwell said.

If passed, the bill would allow CHL holders to bring concealed weapons onto public universities. Private universities could choose to go gun-free.

"It does respect the private property rights of the private institutions, and they have the opportunities to opt-out of the requirements," Birdwell said. "So we do want to respect the private institutions private property rights."

The bill also gives some say to universities on where students can and cannot bring their concealed weapons.

"They are to establish some rules and some boundaries, sporting events for example, are separated out of there, so it provides quite a bit of local control for the local universities," said State Senator Kelly Hancock.

Hancock said the bill would not just affect students.

"And really more what you're talking about more with a CHL on a college campus is really you're probably addressing more professors, university employees then you are actually students," Hancock said.

Birdwell said CHL holders living on-campus at public universities would have to secure the gun, according to university set rules.

NBC 5 reached out to several DFW area universities and colleges for an opinion about the bill.

"In keeping with state law, neither the University of North Texas, as one of the state's public institutions, nor I in my position as the university president, may take a position supporting or opposing any specific State of Texas legislation," UNT President V. Lane Rawlings said in a statement.

TCU's chancellor also released a statement on the bill.

""With respect to the proposed bill, TCU's biggest priority is keeping the campus safe. We accomplish that through our 24/7 TCU Police force, which has procedures in place dedicated to the protection of all members of our community. I believe that TCU, as a private institution, should be provided with a choice as to whether we would permit someone with a concealed weapon license to carry a weapon on campus," said TCU Chancellor Victor J. Boschini Jr.

In the past, the student congress at UTA passed a resolution against CHL holders bringing concealed guns to class.

The bill has been referred to the Criminal Justice Committee.

A Colleyville mother was indicted Wednesday on one felony count of criminal mischief.

A Tarrant County grand jury indicted Tara Mauney for her alleged role in a juvenile prank from July 2012.

Investigators from the Colleyville Police Department said Mauney took a group of middle school students to a Bedford Walmart in late July 2012 to purchase supplies. The group then vandalized a property in the 4600 block of Alexandra Drive, investigators said.

Mauney and the kids reportedly threw toilet paper into the trees, put raw chicken in a mailbox, used dark markers to scrawl foul language on a wall of the home and wrote similar words on the driveway with mustard, police said.

Mauney's attorney, Warren St. John, told NBC 5 his client denies any wrongdoing and that he is disappointed with the indictment. St. John added that he and his client were frustrated Wednesday when the members of the grand jury declined to hear her testimony.

Criminal mischief is a felony that carries with it a maximum of a $10,000 fine and up to two years in state prison.

A trial date has not yet been set, St. John said.

Neither representatives from the Colleyville Police Department nor the Tarrant County District Attorney's Office would comment on the indictment.

American Airlines and US Airways have made tentative plans to announce a merger early next week, according to four sources familiar with the planning.

The sources caution no final decisions have been made, but that the announcement could come as early as Tuesday morning.

US Airways CEO Doug Parker would head the merged airline, which instantly would become the world's largest.

Under the scenario, now in its final stages, American Airlines CEO Tom Horton would accept a multimillion dollar payout to exit the company or take an honorary post on the board of directors in which he has no real power, the sources said.

An American spokesman said late Wednesday the company has no comment on rumors or speculation.

Unions representing pilots, flight attendants and ground workers have pushed for months for the merger. Privately, union leaders expressed cautious jubilation that the announcement appeared close.

A new merged airline would be based in Fort Worth and operate under the American name. The US Airways brand would go away.

American declared bankruptcy Nov. 29, 2011 and is expected to emerge in the next few months.

One source who supports the merger said Horton was still "throwing grenades in the room" and still opposed combining companies right now -- even as his own managers were preparing for the transition without him.

Another person with close knowledge of the deliberations of the creditors' committee said the influential group has essentially agreed on the valuation of each airline -- somewhere close to 75 percent for American and 25 percent for US Airways. That would bring more money to American's creditors because the talks started at 70 percent and 30 percent.

Parents magazine released its list of best children's hospitals in the country. Two of the top 20 are in Texas.

Texas Children's Hospital in Houston ranked seventh on the magazine's list, while Children's Medical Center of Dallas ranked at number 20. The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia topped the list as number one.

Parents magazine analyzed 1,000 pieces of information from 66 children's hospitals across the country. From the sample, the magazine ranked hospitals based on everything from cutting edge treatments to routine care to kid-friendly and innovative programs.

Texas Children's Hospital in Houston ranked seventh for several reasons including, the highest level of nursing care, more than 10 experimental cancer studies, and a survival rate of 85 percent or higher for complex heart surgeries.

Children's Medical Center in Dallas was recognized for the child life program – providing support for sick kids and their families. The program runs daily until midnight.  The joint orthopedics program between Children's Medical Center of Dallas and Texas Scottish Rite Children's Hospital ranked number eight in Parents magazine's 10 best children's hospitals for orthopedic care.

NBC 5's Investigative Consumer Unit spoke with Parents magazine. The authors of the study have advice if you are not near one of the top hospitals and your child needs critical or specialized care.

  • First and foremost, be your child's biggest and best advocate.
  • Ask specific questions about treatments and studies.
  • Being proactive may lead you to a bigger or more well-renowned hospital at a lower cost.

Lewisville police say two pedestrians were struck by a vehicle while crossing a street Monday night.

A driver hit two pedestrians trying to cross Fox Avenue at about 6:45 p.m., police say. Both victims have been airlifted to Parkland Hospital.

Lewisville police tell NBC 5 that both victims are in critical, but stable condition, at Parkland.

Police say the two pedestrians were struck crossing Fox Avenue, near Edmonds Lane, in an area without a crosswalk.

The two victims were hit by the driver of a 2002 Kia Sedona, police say.

The driver, whose name has not been released, stopped and waited for police to arrive and is fully cooperating with the investigation.

Lewisville police are working to identify the two victims and notify their  families.

Nearly 1,000 parents and students attended a community meeting in Southlake Monday night to talk about teen depression and suicide.

"The problems I think are the same as many other communities but we're really putting our foot down and saying we've got to talk about this and we've got to do something about it" says organizer Laura Hill, with Students and Parents Against Risks to our Kids (SPARK).

SPARK held three similar meetings this past fall focused on drugs and alcohol use, but after last month's drug overdose deaths of two students from Carroll Senior High School, interest in Monday night's meeting spiked.

"I think it just shows people that this is really happening here, you can't just ignore it any more," says high school junior Clayton Archer, "...and those deaths really showed that we have a problem here and kids need help."

Students themselves suggested the topic for Monday's meeting, after three teen suicides and 14 attempted suicides in Southlake since 2010.

"I just think it was important to show like what this can do to you, how suicide can affect other people and drugs, and just to find healthier ways to be able to handle stress and depression and stuff like that," says high school junior Jennifer Anderson.

The city now has a task force looking for better ways to keep kids safe, addressing everything from drug and alcohol use, depression and suicide, to school security.

The task force expects to make some recommendations by the end of March.

No Recall on IKEA Glass Desks After Rare Breakage Reports

advertisement

The Consumer Product Safety Commission has received reports of at least seven tempered glass desks from IKEA spontaneously shattering.  While no recall has been issued, NBC 5 Investigates Consumer Unit looked into why the desks, which do not all have the same design, are breaking and what's being done.

One of the CPSC reports came from Honey Grove resident Kayla Hall.  She came home from work several weeks ago to find her IKEA glass desk had spontaneously shattered.  Pieces were everywhere, she said, in every corner of the room, on top of other furniture and even in the hallway.

"Pieces had gone under the door into the closet, which is across the room.  Anywhere it could get, it pretty much was," Hall said.

Hall bought the desk months before, which was black and clear with images of butterflies and flowers, at IKEA in Frisco.

"IKEA had the best prices," said Hall. "And I liked the style of the things they had.  And when I saw that desk it had the flowers and the butterflies.  I thought this it's cute. It's girly. I like it."

Hall spent hours every day studying at the desk for her CPA exam.  She said she was thankful no one was home, her dogs were in their crates and no one was injured when the desk broke.

"No Way to Predict" When, If Tempered Glass May Fail

"There's really no way to predict when and where this is going to happen," said Lee Green, a professional engineer at Goodson Engineering in Denton who studies things like glass failures. "You can have a glass table in service for two, four, 10 years before it finally fails."

But experts like Green said though these breakages are rare, there are typically explanations.  The most common reason is if the glass gets hit or nicked.  Even a tiny tap or nick can eventually cause the glass to break. But if a hit or nick or scratch can be ruled out, the other the reason tempered glass may spontaneously break is because there may be an impurity or inclusion left in the glass during the manufacturing process.

"They are microscopic flaws in the glass that can't be detected easily," explained John Waskow, also a professional engineer and the director of regional operations for Architectural Testing, a company with a Southlake facility that assesses whether glass in buildings meets safety standards.

These tiny flaws, while rare, occur in the tempering process, ironically the very same process that makes glass stronger and safer.

"Roughly one percent of all glass produced can be expected to fail spontaneously at some point during its life," Waskow said.

Hall said nothing fell on her desk and she didn't believe it had any hits or nicks.
But to figure out why her desk broke would take a lot of time, and it would be costly, so she may never know the exact reason.  But her tempered glass desk did break as it was supposed to, into tiny chucks and not into sharp chards of regular glass.

NBC 5 contacted the CPSC about Hall's desk and the other IKEA desks.

"From the reports and pictures we received, the tempered glass broke into nugget-sized pieces as the standard requires. This raises a question about whether this is a quality or safety issue," said Alex Filip, a spokesman for the CPSC.

NBC 5 also contacted IKEA spokeswoman Mona Astra Liss, who said that IKEA'S glass has one of the most rigorous testing processes of the entire IKEA product range.

"Fragmentation tests are made daily at our process suppliers and are continuously followed up by our purchasing teams in quality reviews," Liss said in a statement.

The statement also said: "Sometimes the tension caused by a strike, a knock or a scratch stays in the glass. A very small impact can make the glass shatter, hours or even months later. This is why glass, at rare occasions, may seem to shatter for no apparent reason."

In an email to Hall, IKEA apologized and told her, "The safety of our customers is very important."

The letter went on to say that the company would file a report with its quality and safety group in Sweden.  IKEA also issued her a refund.

"It's just one of those things you don't think about when you're buying furniture.  You don't think that it could suddenly just blow up on you," Hall said.

The CPSC reviews every report filed on its website, SaferProducts.gov, and notifies the named manufacturer within five days of the report being filed, Filip said. So the agency encourages consumers with a product safety or standard concern to file a report.

"The more reports on SaferProducts.gov, the more information CPSC and other consumers have to evaluate a product safety issue. Details like the make, model and serial number of the product are very helpful when filing a report on SaferProducts.gov," he said.

Hall said she intends to steer clear of a glass when she looks to buy another desk.

"I definitely won't be going with glass again," Hall said.

Waskow, on the other hand, isn't concerned.  He told NBC 5, coincidentally, he has an IKEA glass desk with butterflies and flowers, just like the one purchased by Hall's, in his daughter's room.

"My daughter uses it and I have no issues or concerns with it," he said.

Authorities say the Iraq War veteran charged in the shooting deaths at a Texas gun range had threatened himself and his family in the past, police records say.

Eddie Ray Routh is facing one count of capital murder and two counts of murder in the deaths of former Navy SEAL and "American Sniper" author Chris Kyle and his friend Chad Littlefield.

Kyle and Littlefield were shot and killed at a Texas gun range on Saturday.

NBC 5 obtained police reports from Lancaster Monday that said Routh was admitted to a psychiatric hospital in Sept. 2012, after his mother said he'd threatened to "blow his brains out."

Routh Held in Segregated Housing in Erath Co. Jail

Eddie Ray Routh, the man accused of killing "American Sniper" Chris Kyle and friend Chad Littlefield, is being held in segregated housing in the Erath Co. jail while his mental competency is under evaluation.

In the report, officers said they were called to a disturbance where Routh was threatening to kill himself and his family. Officers said they'd found Routh walking without shoes and a shirt and that he smelled of alcohol.  According to police, Routh told them that he was a Marine veteran, suffering from PTSD and that he was hurting and that his family didn't understand what he'd been through.

According to Routh's mother, who is quoted in the report, he became upset when his father said he was going to sell Routh's gun.

An earlier report from the Lancaster police, from May of 2012, indicated Routh's mother Jodi had called police after she said her son had taken nine bottles of pills from her home.

On Monday, Routh's attorney said his client was counseled as recently as Jan. 29 at a Dallas Veterans Affairs hospital and was taking medication.

Routh, a member of the Marine Corps Reserve, is being held at the Erath County Jail on $3 million bond.  According to Erath County Sheriff Tommy Bryant, Routh is on suicide watch.

NBC 5's Scott Gordon and Randy McIlwain contributed to this report.

Raw Video: 49ers Fans React to Super Bowl Loss

49er die-hard fans at Pete's in San Francisco clap their hands to their heads in defeat as their beloved team loses the Super Bowl to the Baltimore Ravens Sunday night.

More Photos and Videos

San Francisco police reported minor flare-ups of violence as disappointed San Francisco 49ers fans reacted to their team's loss to the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday during the Super Bowl.

Fans threw bottles at police officers in the Mission District following the 49ers 34-31  loss, according to Officer Carlos Manfredi. And as of 10 p.m., police had arrested  25 people, mostly for being drunk.

Police were doing their best to prevent more major calamities as they shut down parts of the Mission to stop cars from cruising and parking while street sweepers cleaned up any potential fire hazards.

"I think they're doing a great job," said Shanah Ucan of San Francisco. "People are safe, people who want to come out and enjoy what's happening."

The city was much calmer than when the San Francisco Giants won the World Series in October when several vandals took to the streets, setting fires, breaking windows and torching a Muni bus.

For full U.S. news coverage, visit NBCNews.com.

For the Super Bowl, Mayor Ed Lee had worked with police, fire and bar owners to prevent such mayhem from happening on the streets in San Francisco, even asking patrons to not serve hard alcohol and cut customers off if they were getting too drunk.

"It's nowhere compared to the Giants," Manfredi said.

At Pete's Tavern in San Francisco, the mood was definitely somber, as fans clapped their hands to the heads as the Niners lost the game. Still, many said they were proud of their hometown team.

Elsewhere in the city, in neighborhoods such as the Haight  Ashbury, fans reported a somber mood but no violence. Although in some part of the city, residents felt the need to set off some fireworks, despite the loss.

Lee congratulated the 49ers for their "spectacular  performance" despite the 34-31 defeat.

"The entire team demonstrated what you can accomplish with enough  perseverance and teamwork," Lee said in a statement. "The journey of the 49ers in their 'Quest for Six' reinvigorated  San Francisco Bay Area football fans in a way unseen for nearly two decades."

8 Dead, 38 Injured in Tour Bus Crash Near LA

advertisement

Eight people were killed and 38 people were injured on Sunday when a tour bus that apparently had brake problems collided with a truck and a second vehicle on a mountain road 80 miles east of Los Angeles.

Firefighters from multiple agencies responded to Highway 38 near Bryant Street in Mentone (MAP) about 6:30 p.m. The road is used to travel to and from the mountain resort of Big Bear.

Passengers told NBC4 that they were coming down the mountain from a day of skiing and snowboarding in Big Bear when the driver said something to the effect that the brakes were out.

The passengers heard noises they thought were brakes and smelled something burning and then watched in horror as the bus weaved in and out of traffic for up to three minutes, trying to avoid cars.

The bus hit a car, then flipped.

Some riders blacked out only to awaken up to 20 feet away from the bus.

They said the driver was stuck under a rock, but he survived.

CHP Officer Mario Lopez told the Associated Press that eight people were confirmed dead and 38 were injured.

Lopez said the bus driver reported having brake problems as it came down the mountain, rear-ending a sedan then flipping over and hitting a pickup truck that was pulling a trailer.

There were 39 people aboard the bus. Four other people in two other vehicles were involved in the crash.

The bus that rolled at least once, said Ronald Walls, a battalion chief at the San Bernardino County Fire Department. It had significant damage to the passenger's side, he said.

Terri Kasinga of Caltrans described the crash as the worst she's seen in 23 years working for the agency.

The bus was from Tijuana headed back from Big Bear, she said. A member of the Mexican Consulate was at the scene.

It was a chaotic scene as firefighters worked to extricate people from the bus and emergency crews set up triage areas in a "mass casualty" situation, said Eric Sherwin, with the San Bernardino County Fire Department.

People were being extricated from the bus more than an hour after the crash on the two-lane highway. Rescuers were still searching the wreckage for victims hours later. Television footage showed the bus sitting upright but turned sideways on the road.

Firefighters called a network of doctors and nurses to poll hospitals on bed availability, Sherwin said.

Arrowhead Regional Medical Center said four women had been admitted from the crash and their conditions were still being determined. Redland Community Hospital said it received one person in critical condition and one with minor injuries, while two more were en route with minor injuries.

Community Hospital of San Bernardino said it had received one patient with undetermined injuries, while St. Bernadine Medical Center said it had two patients, whose injuries were being assessed.

Witnesses said a bus hit a truck and rolled down an embankment, possibly clipping other cars.

Highway 38 was closed in both directions while emergency crews worked the scene.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Boy Scouts Debate Anti-Gay Policy

The Boy Scouts of America begin debating their anti-gay policy in Irving on Monday.

The new policy under discussion would be up to individual troops to allow gay members.

The Irving-based Boy Scouts expect to announce a decision after this week's board meeting.

Several groups plan to rally near the national headquarters in Irving, both for and against a possible change in policy.

Texas Governor Rick Perry is among those against making any changes. He spoke to an annual gathering of scouts from around Texas on Saturday as hundreds of troops were at the state capitol.

Gov. Perry spoke about his own experiences in scouting and made it clear he's against changing the controversial policy.

"Scouting is about teaching a substantial amount of life lessons," Perry said. "Sexuality is not one of them. Never has been and doesn't need to be."

But the Commander in Chief disagrees. In an interview just before the Super Bowl, President Obama said he wants the boy scouts to allow gays and lesbians to join.

The President called the scouts "a great institution" that promotes young people and said "no one should be barred from that."

Pres. Obama also called out the scouts during last year's presidential campaign, saying he opposed the long standing policy of excluding gays as members.

The Boy Scouts have previously reviewed their policy on not accepting gays as members. Last year, after a two-year review of the rule, the Scouts reaffirmed their longstanding policy as it has been a continual target of numerous protest campaigns.

In recent months, some corporate sponsors, including pharmaceutical giant Merck, had pulled funding from the organization due to the exclusionary rule. James Turley, the chairman of Ernst & Young, and Randall Stephenson, CEO of AT&T, vowed in 2012 to work together to change the Boy Scout's policy after a den leader in Ohio was ousted from her position due to her sexual orientation.

I-30 Reopened After Wrong Way Crash Kills Two

advertisement

A fatal wrong-way crash killed two people and closed down Interstate 30 at Beach Street early Monday morning.

The crash closed all eastbound lanes the freeway just before the Beach Street exit and forced drivers to exit the freeway and detour around the crash using Lancaster Street or other options.

Signal flares lit up the early morning darkness for miles as Fort Worth police investigated the scene.

According to the police department, a black sedan was traveling the wrong way, driving westbound on the eastbound lanes of I-30 at Beach.

Investigators say that sedan ran into a white, two-door coupe driving eastbound.

Each vehicle had only one person inside, but both have died after the crash, according to police.

Lanes of the freeway were re-opened at 5:59 a.m. Monday, but investigators were still working portions of the scene to identify the parties invovled.

Fast Five Live's Keaton Fox (@KeatonFoxNBC5) shows the scene via Vine:

Previously, in March 2011, a wrong-way crash near that same exchange killed a truck driver and caused a massive fire that scorched two lanes of I-30 at Beach so severely that Texas Department of Transportation had to shut down the area for months to repair.

Pet Store Accused of Selling Puppies With Parvo

advertisement

Mansfield Chief of Police Gary L. Fowler is opening an investigation into a local pet store after the NBC 5 Investigates Consumer Unit was alerted to claims by several families that they purchased puppies that were sick with parvovirus.

Three families who all said they bought their puppies at PetOrama in Mansfield told NBC 5 that their animals were diagnosed with parvovirus, a very contagious, aggressive virus that attacks a dog's intestinal track.

According to the families, two of the puppies had to be euthanized while one survived after an aggressive veterinary treatment that cost them more than $1,000.

While Fowler, who oversees animal control for the city, originally told NBC 5 he had no records of complaints against the store, he said he now plans to open an investigation.

In an unrelated move, PetOrama said it will stop adopting out puppies, but is holding one last adoption event this weekend to sell the remaining dogs at the store.

Families Claim Store Sold Them Sick Puppies

"Truly, I never thought that when you go into a pet store like that you would purchase a sick dog," said Penny Rivera, a Mansfield resident.

Rivera bought a shepherd-mix puppy named Leo as a Christmas present for 13-year-old Andrew Caraveo and his 21-year-old sister Jenny who had lost their beloved dog only a few months before.

"I picked Leo because he just looked really cute," said Jenny, who said she knew her brother would be delighted by the holiday surprise.

And he was.  Andrew immediately fell in love with the dog and made little Leo a doghouse out of a cardboard box.  He doted on him like any 13-year-old with a new puppy would.

But a few days later, Leo was vomiting, had diarrhea and was lethargic.

"He looked very sick," Andrew said.

A trip to the vet revealed Leo had a severe case of parvo.  Andrew and Jenny then made the gut-wrenching decision to put Leo to sleep.

"I knew how he looked and how tired he was, he wasn't going to make it," Andrew said.

"We just said, 'Goodbye.' I mean, it was just really hard.  There was nothing we could really say to him," said Jenny, as tears streamed down her face.

Joanna McCoy and Phillip Kriesman know that pain. The couple bought a long-haired dachshund named Hudson at the same Mansfield PetOrama and it was love at first sight.

"As soon as I picked him up I knew he was my dog," said McCoy. "I loved him. I was so happy."

They paraded Hudson to McCoy's mother's house and showed him off to other relatives. But that evening they rushed Hudson, who was throwing up, to an emergency veterinary hospital.  The veterinarian told the couple that little Hudson had parvo.

They too made the decision to put Hudson to sleep.

"I just couldn't feel myself afterwards. It was just so weird and upsetting," Kreisman said.

PetOrama to Stop Puppy Adoptions Due to Complaints

NBC 5 called PetOrama and spoke to Rochelle Browning, the daughter of the owner who said she manages the store for her father.

She insisted she takes good care of the puppies and that her dogs are checked by a veterinarian.

"My veterinary bills are outrageous," Browning said.

Browning admitted that Hudson, who died shortly after leaving her store, had parvo when she sold him. PetOrama's owner did refund McCoy and Kreisman for Hudson and she paid their vet bill, but they said it's little consolation.

"It's a heartache that no one should have to go through," said McCoy, who thinks about Hudson every day.

As for the other dogs, she believed they may have gotten sick after they left her store. Browning said her staff sanitizes cages daily but does not dispute the fact that parvo has up to a two-week incubation period.

The families said Leo and Hudson were visibly sick within days of being purchased.

Browning then became emotional, telling NBC 5 she's under extreme stress because so many puppies have gotten sick with parvo and customers have been very upset.

"I've never seen this before in my life.  Emotionally, I'm spent," Browning said. "I can't listen to people cry over the phone anymore."

On the company's Facebook page she told customers that PetOrama has decided to "stop adopting out puppies." But there will be one last adoption event this weekend to sell the remaining dogs.

"It's hard when you love pets like we do and have taken all the measures possible trying to prevent illness, but then get treated badly by customers when they do get ill," she wrote.

Parvo is extremely contagious because a dog can shed the virus before it ever shows signs of the illness.

"It's really hard to kill the virus. It's resistant to common disinfectants," said Dr. Nancy Turner, the Dallas District Director of the Texas Veterinary Medical Association.  "It's resistant to heat. It's resistant to sunlight. So, really, it's a tough bug essentially."

Turner, who practices at Bent Tree Animal Hospital in Dallas, said that by the time one puppy shows the signs there is a good chance other dogs could be infected.

State Offers No Legal Remedy for Purchase of Sick Dogs

Unlike some other states, Texas does not have a Lemon Law for dogs.

"There's no regulation of pet stores of any shape, form or fashion at the state level," said Skip Trimble, a Texas Humane Legislation Network board member.

Trimble's organization advocates for state animal welfare legislation. While there are rules and regulations for larger breeders at the state level, as of now, individual cities and towns may or may not have ordinances that can help pet owners.

"You're just totally at risk and virtually there is no warranty on these dogs," Trimble said.

The City of Mansfield does have an ordinance that gives animal control the authority to inspect pet stores.  It also mandates that anyone with care and control of an animal "maintain the animal in good health."

Fowler said that if a pet store fails to maintain the health of their animals they can impose a fine.

Fowler originally insisted he had no record of any complaints against PetOrama.  But McCoy said she called animal control and spoke with an officer several weeks ago.

"He said that unfortunately it's not in their jurisdiction and there's nothing that they could do for me,"  McCoy said.

However, after speaking with NBC 5, Fowler said he is now opening an investigation.

Rivera said Browning did not give her a refund for Leo or help with the vet bills.

Craig Haemker said he also received no help from the store after a puppy he purchased, Sophie, was diagnosed with parvo and required a $1,000 aggressive medical treatment to be rid of the virus.

Today, Sophie is a happy, healthy dog, but Jenny and Andrew are still reeling from losing Leo.

"That dog just meant the world to us," said Jenny.

They want to make sure other families don't suffer like they have.  That, they said, is Leo's legacy.

Downtown Dallas Driver’s License Office Disappears

advertisement

The only driver's license office in Downtown Dallas has closed, potentially adding to long lines at other license offices. This comes after DPS told NBC 5 Investigates there were no plans to close any DFW offices.

There is more frustration for North Texans trying to renew their driver's licenses.  The busy Department of Public Safety license office inside Dallas City Hall has shut down. Only an empty counter and some old computer wires remain after the DPS quietly moved out in mid-December.

Just last summer the top DPS official in charge of the Texas license offices told NBC 5 Investigates there were no plans to close any locations in the DFW area, as the DPS tries to reduce long lines and wait times that can last three hours or more especially during the busy summer months.

"We're not closing any offices.  We are opening brand new.  We are expanding our capacity to be able to serve that demand," said Rebecca Davio, director of the DPS License Division in an interview in July, 2012.

Davio was describing a multi-million-dollar DPS plan to open two new Dallas-Ft. Worth license Megacenters, one in Garland and one in Fort Worth.  The agency said the two giant facilities would only add to the current locations in an effort to cut wait times at all of the exiting offices.

So what changed?  Why would DPS close a busy license office when it's already struggling to keep up with demand?

DPS tells us it had no plans to leave Dallas City Hall.  Instead, the City of Dallas kicked them out.

"The decision was not a mutual one.  The city expressly asked DPS to leave the premises in October.  DPS had no plans to vacate the facility," said DPS spokesperson Tom Vinger.

City of Dallas spokesman Frank Librio responded saying, "We really never had adequate space for them to conduct their operations."  He described the office as "inadequate and overcrowded."

Because of new security measures in the works at City Hall, Librio said the city wanted to clear out the space. He points out DPS is free to lease another office anywhere in downtown Dallas.

So far DPS has not done that.

But in an interview Thursday, DPS Director Steve McCraw said the agency will pull together money to open a new downtown Dallas location.

"Because of some of the savings we achieved in some other areas, we are going to prioritize a Dallas office in the downtown area and a Houston office in the downtown area because we've demonstrated the numbers need it", McCraw said.

DPS had plans to ask the legislature for millions of dollars to create new downtown offices in Dallas and Houston.  However, McCraw said the agency has decided to move ahead using existing funds instead.

Until DPS can find a new location, Downtown Dallas does not have a single driver's license office.

The office at City Hall used to serve an average of 180 customers a day, or about 45,000 customers last year alone, according to DPS records.

When NBC 5 Investigates visited that office over the summer we found it was so crowded people were sitting on the floor, some waiting for hours.

Since the City Hall location closed, a steady stream of customers continues to stop by during the day, surprised to find it's gone.

To get to the next closest DPS office they have to get on Interstate 35 and drive 10 miles south to Red Bird Lane, a trip that takes about 14 minutes each way if there's no traffic.

"It is an inconvenience, you know.  It's a waste of time and waste of bus fare," said Tobi Hicks who travelled to the City Hall office only to find it closed.

"You have to come down here waste gas and then go somewhere else I guess," said customer Emmanuel Dotson.

DPS hopes many customers will go to the new Garland Mega Center – which opened in December and is designed to handle 900 transactions every day above and beyond what the existing offices can handle. Now some of that new capacity will be taken up by thousands of customers who used to go to City Hall.

DPS is banking on the Mega Centers to reduce the long lines at all of the license offices. But the DFW population is growing fast and now the agency has lost an office in Dallas.  The Investigative Team will be watching over the spring and summer to see how well the Mega Centers really help improve wait times.

The new Mega Center in Fort Worth on Brentwood Stair Road opened Feb. 1.

Michael Hancock once lived on the streets and under bridges across North Texas. But now, the Vietnam-era U.S. Army veteran has a new home as part of a new outlook.

The 56-year-old is the father of ten grown children and 12 grandchildren. He struggled with alcohol and drugs after leaving the military.

Two years ago, Hancock turned his life around. First, he began working at the Veterans Administration hospital. Then he applied to a sobriety program and in the process, moved into an apartment.

His ultimate dream was to become a homeowner.

That became a reality on Saturday, when he moved into a new four bedroom house in Dallas. It was provided by a partnership between the Department of Veteran's Affairs and Habitat for Humanity.

"So many people told me to give up," said Hancock. "But my faith in God and the love of veterans that have in America. American loves veterans and it happened."

Hancock now speaks to other veterans who are homeless as a source of encouragement.

According to the US Department of Veteran Affairs, 2500 homeless vets live in the Dallas/Fort Worth area.

A decorated former Navy SEAL who authored the best-selling book "American Sniper" was one of two people shot and killed at an Erath County shooting range Saturday, the Texas Highway Patrol said.

Highway Patrol spokesman Sgt. Lonny Haschel told NBC 5 early Sunday morning that Chris Kyle, 38, and Chad Littlefield, 35, were shot and killed at a shooting range at Rough Creek Resort and Lodge in Glen Rose late Saturday afternoon.

"The suspected gunman was identified as Eddie Ray Routh, of Lancaster," Haschel said. "Routh is believed to have shot the victims around 3:30 p.m. He left the range then in a Ford pickup truck. He traveled back to his residence in Lancaster."

Haschel said Routh was taken into custody after a brief police pursuit. Lancaster police said Routh was arrested along Interstate 35E near Camp Wisdom Road in Lancaster.

NBC 5 crews reported that a Ford pickup truck was recovered after Routh was taken into custody.

NBC 5 sources say Routh was in Kyle's pickup truck when he was arrested, but Haschel could not confirm that information.

Haschel said Routh will face capital murder charges.

"He was transported to the Lancaster Police Department, where he's been arraigned on two counts of capital murder," Haschel said. "Eventually, he'll be transferred back to Erath County, absolutely. But this evening, he's being arraigned on two counts of capital murder here in Lancaster."

The Stephenville Empire-Tribune first reported that Kyle and another man had been shot at Rough Creek.

Empire-Tribune reporter Sara Vanden Berge told NBC 5 late Saturday night that it did not sound like an accidental shooting but appeared to be an intentional shooting.

Vanden Berge said her understanding was that Kyle had an open invitation to visit and use the range at Rough Creek and did not have a guide with him.

A source told her that the man suspected in the shootings was a veteran and may have been doing some sort of shooting therapy, she told NBC 5.

Kyle, who was born in West Texas and grew up in Dallas, served four combat tours in Iraq and elsewhere between the start of the war and 2008.

Kyle is believed to have been one of the best snipers in the world and holds the most career sniper kills in U.S. military history with 160 confirmed kills.

The previous American record was 109, according to Kyle's New York Times No. 1 bestselling book "American Sniper."

Kyle was awarded two Silver Stars, five Bronze Stars with Valor, two Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals and one Navy and Marine Corps Commendation, according to Craft International, the company he founded after leaving the military.

According to his biography on the company's website, Iraqi insurgents dubbed Kyle "al-Shaitan" ("the devil") and placed a bounty on his head.

Craft International offers training to military and law enforcement.

FITCO Cares, a foundation Kyle helped establish, said in a statement that it was committed to making sure his memory lives on forever. The foundation assists veterans fighting post-traumatic stress disorder.

"Please pray for all those who loved Chris," the foundation said. "He will be forever missed."

Kyle competed on NBC's "Stars Earn Stripes" last summer.

The reality show paired eight celebrities with people from a branch of the military or a first-responder agency to compete in missions inspired by military exercises. Kyle teamed up with actor Dean Cain, who competed for the Wounded Warrior Project.

Cain tweeted on Saturday:

"2013 started out fantastic...Now it's a heartbreak. #SadDay"

Cain retweeted other messages of condolence for Kyle and his family. Other "Stars Earn Stripes" participants also tweeted about Kyle on Saturday night.

NBC 5's Chris Van Horne contributed to this report.
