Liquor stores across North Texas may owe their local police departments a round of drinks or, at the very least, a thank you.

Alcohol sales normally skyrocket in the days before folks toast the New Year. But sales this year may spike even higher because so many police departments are conducting no-refusal weekends.

During no-refusal periods, special patrols are out on interstates and major streets. The task forces include judges that can immediately authorize the suspension of licenses and force blood testing on drivers who refuse sobriety testing.

Liquor store managers say fear of the patrols is part of what is driving sales.

Managers at Specs in Dallas said 50 percent of their customers are purchasing alcohol for parties they're planning to have at home. Many are professional people who want to toast in the New Year with a few drinks without the risk of an encounter with a no-refusal patrol, they said.

Liquor stores will not have any special hours but expect crowds through closing on Saturday. They also expect sales to pick up again Monday because of last-minute shoppers.

Frisco ISD Closes Tax Building Over Conn. Shooting

The Frisco school district tax building is closed for the winter break -- but not for reasons most parents are used to hearing.

A note taped to the building tells parents: "Due to the recent events in Connecticut, the FISD administration is requiring us to keep this building locked during the winter break."

In a statement sent late Friday night, Frisco Independent School District spokesman Jamie Driskill said the district decided to keep the building locked during the winter break when the building was not fully occupied because of "security concerns heightened by recent events."

The note on the building tells parents they can drop their payment in a drop box and apologized for the inconvenience.

Driskill said payments are collected daily. Payments are noted as being paid that day, and receipts are then mailed, he said.

The building's note caught Sunil Malik by surprise. The parent was coming to pay his taxes and get a receipt. He said he didn't understand why the building, which is near a middle school but not connected to the classrooms, was closed.

"It says it's a security concern, but the shootings were related to the kids, and it's not a school," he said.

Rejesh Chauhan, another parent, drove up to the building to pay his taxes. He read the sign and thought the note perhaps was a show of compassion for the recent tragedy in Connecticut. But he said he wasn't too pleased about having to drop his check into a drop box.

"If they put this note, I wish they would send a little sweet letter at home telling the exact reason, right?" he said.

Driskill said the district agreed that the note on the building was confusing, saying that a better solution would be determined in the future and communicated better.

The office will be open during its regular hours next week Wednesday through Friday and until noon on Monday, he said.

Investigators are trying to find the person who torched several classic cars at a business in Forney on Christmas Day.

Gerald Gauthier, owner of the Mustang Shop, said a friend called on Christmas morning to tell him that several cars parked outside his lot were on fire.

"He said, 'Your business, it looks like a war zone,'" he said.

Gauthier arrived to find three classic Mustangs gutted and several more with smashed windows.

"The first thing he did is, he went to destroy glass on all the vehicles," he said.

The vandal was caught on surveillance cameras installed outside Gauthier's business.

In the video, the person can be seen walking up to the vehicles, smashing the windows and then lighting something on fire. Shortly afterward, several of the vehicles can be seen erupting into flames.

"They're gone; they're completely gone. The '69 is somewhat salvageable, but these two here, they're just plain gone," said Gauthier while pointing to two classic Mustangs that were scorched and gutted by flames.

Gauthier said it has taken years to build up his business. What happened will set him back thousands of dollars, he said.

"I think someone that does this wouldn't hesitate to do it again to someone else," he said.

Now he just wants the person caught before he strikes again.

"I think somebody doesn't have any Christmas spirit," he said. "I don't have any words for it. I couldn't really even explain it."

Investigators said the couple came to the food pantry together, but Roy Gooden got angry for unknown reasons and started stabbing his wife.

A security guard detained Gooden until police arrived.

His wife died at a local hospital.

According to court records, Gooden is a convicted felon whose previous crimes include aggravated assault, burglary and driving while intoxicated.

Police said they have not yet identified a motive for the slaying.

AA-US Airways Merger Could Happen Next Month

Written By Unknown on Jumat, 28 Desember 2012 | 19.31

American Airlines and US Airways could agree to merge as soon as early next month, creating the world's largest airline, company and union insiders say.

Unions are quietly negotiating new deals with a combined company, and if they and the airlines can agree on sticky issues such as seniority, a merger could be put on the fast track.

The board of directors of American's parent company, AMR Corp., has scheduled a meeting Jan. 9 and could vote on a merger then, NBC 5 has learned.

People involved in the process stressed that many difficult details still must be ironed out before a merger vote can take place.

Company and union officials did not want to be quoted by name because of the sensitivity of the ongoing discussions.

The judge in charge of American's bankruptcy and the influential committee of creditors also would have to sign off on a deal.

Leaders of the Allied Pilots Association have huddled in their Fort Worth headquarters since last week. One union official said the APA is "not close" to an agreement but talks are expected to continue Friday and into the weekend.

American's three major unions -- representing pilots, flight attendants, and ground workers -- have already signed new labor agreements with the bankrupt airline. The talks now under way essentially involve new contracts with a merged company.

Combining workforces is full of potential pitfalls for each company. US Airways has not successfully combined labor groups since it merged with America West seven years ago. A merger with American could allow it to solve its current labor issues all at once -- or merely add to their complexity.

A merger would likely mean thousands of American employees would be pushed lower on the seniority list, but the value of a new deal could be a huge incentive. American pilots, for example, could add $100 million per year to their overall compensation, union insiders say.

APA President Keith Wilson sent a letter to pilots Thursday evening, saying if the union does not agree to a new plan, there would likely not be a merger until after American exits bankruptcy.

Wilson acknowledged support for a merger is not unanimous among union leaders or airline executives.

"AMR management has not embraced the concept of expediting a merger before restructuring concludes and clearly wants to retain control of the corporation," he wrote.

Wilson also argued that an agreement on seniority before a possible merger should not be a requirement.

"No legal mechanism exists that would allow union-represented employees to interfere with a major transaction such as a merger," he said.

It's unclear who would lead a combined airline. But analysts say a merger would likely push out American's top executive, Tom Horton, who has led the airline since it declared bankruptcy last November.

US Airways' executives have said if they win control, they would use American's brand name and keep its headquarters in Fort Worth.

Cleburne police detectives are investigating the city's first homicide of 2012.

Early Thursday morning, Cleburne police received a call that someone had been shot in the 100 block of Shaffer Street.

Officers found 30-year-old Brian Poole, of Mesquite, dead in a building. He had been shot twice and wrapped in a blanket.

Friends and acquaintances said the building where Poole was found used to be a hair salon but was converted to a room in which someone was living.

One man said Poole was trying to start a rap career. According to Poole's Facebook page, his stage name was GHo$TMaN. He had recorded a few songs and put them on his page.

Police later arrested James Sample, 31, of Dallas, in Poole's death and charged him with murder, tampering with evidence and possession of a firearm by a felon.

Friends said Sample was armed and had a laser-sight on his gun.

Detectives also arrested Howard "Blaine" Dudley, 54, of Cleburne, and Joseph Alvarez, 29, of San Angelo, on suspicion of tampering with evidence. Kimberly Dudley, 56, of Cleburne, was charged with tampering with evidence and drug possession.

Cleburne detectives said they aren't sure how everyone knew each other but confirmed that Sample and Poole were not strangers.

Police also said that someone called 911 early Thursday morning to report the shooting, but detectives didn't want to say who called because the investigation is ongoing.

All four suspects in the case will remain in the Johnson County Correction Center until their arraignment, which is scheduled to take place Friday.

Dallas police are searching for a burglar who is breaking into homes right under their noses.

The break-ins occurred on Christmas Eve just a couple of blocks from Dallas police headquarters.

"It's kind of wild that on Christmas Eve, someone would come into your house and steal what you've earned," Billy MacLeod said.

His home on Akard Street was one of at least two broken into in the Cedars neighborhood. In both cases, the burglar kicked in the front glass door.

At MacLeod's house, the thieves stole most of his Christmas presents, along with small electronics and jewelry.

"They came in, they opened up all the presents," he said. "They took what they wanted. They probably weren't in here very long."

But the burglar didn't steal his family's Christmas spirit, MacLeod said.

"We weren't going to let a thief take our Christmas, so what we did was, we cleaned up after the police left. We boarded the house up. We went out shopping for each other," he said. "We wrapped our presents in secret. We still had our Christmas morning."

But what the burglar left behind has the radio salesman thinking more like a detective.

"I don't know about being Colombo or Matlock or Perry Mason, but I did find a clue, and I think it points directly to who did this," he said.

The burglar left behind a delivery invoice printed on the morning of Dec. 24. Neighbors also report seeing a white delivery truck in front of his house.

NBC 5 is not releasing the name of the company to allow police time to investigate the invoice.

MacLeod said he found it next to a box of chocolates that had been eaten and some wrapping paper.

The other victim said the burglar opened a bottle of apple juice at her house, as well as a bottle of liquor, and appears to have made a mixed drink while rummaging through her house.

NYC Man Pushed to Death on Subway Tracks

The man was pushed from the tracks at a 7-train station in Queens.

A man was shoved onto subway train tracks and killed Thursday evening in New York City, in the second such fatal subway push attack in the city in a month.

Police are looking for a woman who was seen mumbling to herself before she allegedly pushed the unsuspecting man to his death in front of an oncoming No. 7 train at a Queens subway station Thursday evening, police said.

The man was standing on the northbound platform of the 40th Street and Queens Boulevard elevated train when police say the woman walked up behind him and pushed him onto the tracks. Witnesses told police the man had his back to the woman and didn't appear to notice her. No words were exchanged.

The man died at the scene. His identity has not been released.

Witnesses told police the female suspect had been walking back and forth on the platform and talking to herself before sitting down, alone, on a wooden bench near the north end of the walkway. When the train pulled into the station shortly after 8 p.m., the woman got up off the bench and pushed the man, according to witness statements.

The suspect then fled the platform, running down a flight of stairs to the turnstile area and down a second flight to Queens Boulevard. It's unknown where she went from there. Police released surveillance video of her running onto the street.

The suspect is described as being a heavyset woman about 5 feet 5 inches tall with brown or blond hair. She was wearing a white and gray ski jacket and Nike sneakers at the time of the incident.

"I heard it. One of my customers was on train and heard it going over body," Jiovanni Briones, who works near the scene, told NBC 4 New York.

Earlier this month, Naeem Davis, a 30-year-old deli worker, was arrested and charged with second-degree murder for allegedly pushing another man off a Midtown subway platform to his death.

Ki-Suk Han, 58, was stuck by a southbound Q train after being pushed off the platform at the 49th Street station Dec. 3.

Family Still Searching for Lost Grandmother

Written By Unknown on Kamis, 27 Desember 2012 | 19.31

Mola Lenghi, NBC 5 Arlington Reporter

The Arrocha family's Christmas was a little less bright this year. They're still searching for 77-year-old Maria Arrocha, who suffers from Alzheimer's disease. She's been missing since Dec. 18.

Police and an Arlington family are still searching for a 77-year-old woman with Alzheimer's disease who has been missing for more than a week.

Maria Arrocha has not been heard from since she wandered out of her Arbor Lane home on Dec. 18. She lives with her daughter at the home at New York Avenue and Park Row Lane.

The Arrochas said their Christmas spirits were down this year.

"It was a different day -- no celebration," said Martin Arrocha, her son. "We couldn't eat. We couldn't have dinner. It was a very difficult day."

Maria Arrocha has not been able to take much-needed medications, and her family fears she is lost, cold and confused.

"This is like a nightmare," grandson Ricardo Arrocha said. "We don't know what to do. We go out and look for her, but with no results yet."

Maria Arrocha is Hispanic, stands about 5 feet 5 inches tall and weighs approximately 180 pounds. She has black and gray hair and brown eyes.

"She was always hugging us, kissing us. She was the best," Ricardo Arrocha said.

The family has been distributing fliers in both English and Spanish throughout North Texas. There is a $1,000 reward for information leading to her location.

"We're going to keep trying, passing out fliers, talking to the people, talking to the police," Martin Arrocha said.

Authorities urge people to search around their properties -- backyards, garages and sheds -- because Arrocha is likely wandering and disoriented.

Arlington police say they continue to receive tips but nothing has panned out. They are relying on the public's help in this case, stressing that even the smallest tip could be enough to help bring Maria Arrocha back home.

Anyone who has seen Maria Arrocha is asked to call police by dialing 911 or 817-459-5600 and stay with her until officers arrive.

Body Shops Busy After Winter Storm

Making the Best Out of Frigid Temps

Wrecker services are working overtime in wake of Tuesday's storm, picking up damaged cars and getting them to body shops in cities such as Frisco.

"They're asking us if we're open and once we say yes, they say, 'Well we're on our way,'" said Jason Brassfield at Herb's Paint and Body.

The northern part of the Metroplex -- Grayson, Collin and Denton counties -- is still digging out from the Christmas Day storm, which could possibly linger for the rest of the week.

Wednesday's sunshine began the meltdown, but temperatures remain cold enough that many of the areas are refreezing. And the biggest problem areas Wednesday night were side streets and neighborhoods that did have any trucks plowing or spreading materials to improve traction on the roads.

The current volume of wrecked cars may only be a precursor of what's expected in coming days as more drivers hit the roads in areas that received as much as 6 inches of snow.

"When you factor in the volume of the cars coming in compounded with the holidays -- you know, a lot of these vendors shut down -- it becomes harder to get parts," said Ron Grafflin at Service King. "With the influx of cars, we may have a lot of cars here for a month."

Sandy Relief Center Looted on Christmas

advertisement

A relief center for storm-ravaged New Yorkers was looted and vandalized overnight on Christmas by thieves who stole donated supplies and destroyed items intended for Sandy victims.

The center on Staten Island has been an oasis of hope for those residents of the hard-hit borough who lost their homes in the storm nearly two months ago. The supplies are housed under a tent, blocked off with barricades and manned by volunteers, but the workers left the center unattended on Christmas night.

Thieves made off with baby gear, baby blankets, baby clothes, winter clothing and warm bedding.

Losing those items is "a punch in the stomach," said Mike Hoffman, who heads up the Staten Island volunteer team known as Boots on the Ground.

"I had a couple leftover propane stoves that were donated," said Hoffman. "One was just ripped open, they didn't even take it. They just ripped it open and destroyed it. So that's one less family now that can cook a warm meal."

And with a winter storm heading toward the area again on Wednesday, the center had been stocking crucial supplies.

"People are here struggling, suffering," said Sandy victim Eric Slick.

The people who busted into the center stole supplies from the shelves, ripped open bags of dog food and swiped jackets off hangers.

Volunteers running the site believe thieves plan to return the merchandise for money. They are now looking to relocate the relief center indoors.

TxDOT Crews Ready for Winter Weather

Road crews are ready for North Texas' upcoming Christmas storm.

Road Crews and Residents Prepare for Winter Weather

Drivers prepare their cars for the winter weather while road crews across Tarrant County watch and wait for any winter weather related issues.

Road crews are preparing for the possibility of a white Christmas.

A powerful storm system is expected to bring rain and snow to North Texas.

Rain on Christmas morning is expected to mix and eventually change to snow by the evening. Up to 1 inch of snow is possible for Dallas and Fort Worth on Christmas afternoon and evening.

However, 1 inch to 3 inches of snow is possible toward Denton and McKinney and areas near the Red River.

The Texas Department of Transportation, which monitors more than 10,000 lane miles of roads in North Texas, will have crews keeping an eye on the weather and the ground temperature.

The agency will have roadrunners, crews that look for bad spots on the roads, out in the area. They will check on bridge railings and high points that freeze first to see if there are any sign of freezing or sticking, TxDOT spokeswoman Michelle Releford said.

Releford said the ground temperature will ultimately dictate if the expected rain or snow sticks to the ground.

If needed, about 400 crews are available for TxDOT's 16-county North Texas region. Fort Worth and Dallas each have 30 trucks ready to roll.

Some drivers say the idea of a white Christmas outweighs any worries about dangerous road conditions.

"I'm originally from Illinois, so [I'm] not scared of bad weather," said Ashley Ruiz, of Dallas. "A little dusting of snow isn't going to keep me away from friends and family on Christmas."

But other drivers will be on the lookout for ice.

Jerdal Whitaker said he learned how to drive on the ice while going to school in Lubbock but Dallas drivers aren't quite used to it yet.

"You definitely have to worry about everyone while you're driving, especially out here," he said. "We're not used to the weather that comes, especially when it's ugly, so you definitely have to drive slow."

Marlon Bible's car has big rims and low-profile tires. His LED wheels even light up, showing off every color of the spectrum. But they don't do well in ice or snow.

"I'm just hoping it's not ice. If it is, I'm going to be smart and keep it parked," he said.

The same system that is set to move into North Texas beginning Monday night dropped a significant snowfall on portions of California over the weekend.

NBC 5's Ben Russell, Samantha Davies and Ken Ken Kalthoff contributed to this report.

Santa Claus traded in his red suit for the black and blue uniforms of the Arlington Police Department on Monday.

Arlington police officers spent Christmas Eve delivering gifts, toys and household items to 12 needy families.

"We want to make sure we can make a kid's Christmas," said Randle Meadows, Arlington Police Association president. "We see families and we see children in need every day on our job, and we want to make sure we can go out there and do what we can and help out those families, especially on Christmas."

Officers in each of the city's four patrol districts chose families they thought deserved the toys and other household items.

"We are very ... appreciative of [the officers]," said a tearful Veronica Ordonez, the grandmother of three boys who received gifts from APD. "We thought for a while that we weren't going to have anything."

This is the 26th year the Arlington Santa Cops have delivered toys to families.

A Dallas man was killed after two suspects tried to rob him, police say.

Neighbors say it happened around 1 o'clock on Sunday morning. Relatives say the man was walking home with a friend after playing cards in the neighborhood.

Police say two suspects tried to rob him on the 2400 block of Hawthorne, in the Oak Lawn section of the city.

48-year old Jose Salazar, may have tried to fend him off, according to relatives. He was shot and died at the scene.

"I'm just missing him, because he's a good man, friendly, he's a good worker, all time he's working," said family friend Sylvia Izeta.

She said he was a father of four, and a husband. His family is still in Mexico.

The suspects according to Dallas Police, are still at large, causing neighbors to be worried it may happen again.

Just two days before Christmas, a family is torn, saddened by the loss.

"Imagine, it's no good Christmas, because father is no longer with family," said Izeta.

Cowboys Fall To Saints

advertisement

The Dallas Cowboys fought back from a late, two-touchdown deficit, but the banged-up defense could do only so much to hold off Drew Brees and the Saints offense, eventually falling in overtime, 34-31.

Mark Ingram ran in a nine-yard touchdown in the first quarter to give the Saints an early 7-0 lead, and provided 58 of the 116 rushing yards allowed by Dallas on Sunday.

Dallas waited until the second quarter to answer, but they did, with two 58-yard touchdown passes from Tony Romo to Dez Bryant to take a 14-7 lead.

New Orleans tied it back up with a 6-yard touchdown pass from Brees to Lance Moore. A Garrett Hartley field goal as time ran out on the half gave the Saints the lead at 17-14.

In continuing with a season-long theme, Dallas' defense saw two linebackers--Alex Albright and Ernie Sims--leave with injuries in the first half. Mike Jenkins was hurt as well, after landing on his head awkwardly while trying to make a tackle. However, both Albright and Jenkins would return in the second half.

Dan Bailey hit a 47-yarder to tie the game at 17 in the third quarter, but the banged-up defense couldn't keep Brees and co. at bay very long. Pierre Thomas scored on a five-yard run and then Brees hit David Thomas for a three-yard touchdown to give the Saints a two-touchdown lead, 31-17.

The Cowboys answered with a pair of touchdown passes, from Romo to Dwayne Harris and Miles Austin--the latter of which came with just 15 seconds left--to send the game into overtime.

But after the offense stalled, New Orleans drove down the field, helped along by a fumble that the Saints recovered at the Dallas two-yard line, and Hartley hit the field goal to win it, 34-31.

At 8-7, Dallas will head to DC to face the Redskins next week.

Subdued Mood for Last-Minute Holiday Shoppers

advertisement

Christmas shoppers thronged malls and pounced on discounts but apparently spent less this year, their spirits dampened by concerns about the economy and the aftermath of shootings and storms.

Talk about more than just the usual job worries to cloud the mood: Confidence among U.S. consumers dipped to its lowest point in December since July amid rising economic worries, according to a monthly index released Friday.

Marshal Cohen, chief research analyst at NPD Inc., a market research firm with a network of analysts at shopping centers nationwide, estimates customer traffic over the weekend was in line with the same time a year ago, but that shoppers seem to be spending less.

"There was this absence of joy for the holiday," Cohen said. "There was no Christmas spirit. There have been just too many distractions."

Shoppers are increasingly worried about the "fiscal cliff" deadline — the possibility that a stalemate between Congress and the White House over the U.S. budget could trigger a series of tax increases and spending cuts starting Jan. 1

The recent Newtown, Conn., school shooting also dampened shoppers' spirits atop the fall's retail woes after Superstorm Sandy's passage up the East Coast.

The Northeast and Mid-Atlantic, which account for 24 percent of retail sales nationwide, were tripped up by Sandy when the enormous storm clobbered the region in late October, disrupting businesses and households for weeks.

All that spelled glum news for retailers, which can make up to 40 percent of annual sales during November and December. They were counting on the last weekend before Christmas to make up for lost dollars earlier in the season.

The Saturday before Christmas was expected to be the second biggest sales day behind the Friday after Thanksgiving.

After a strong Black Friday weekend, the four-day weekend that starts on Thanksgiving, when sales rose 2.7 percent, the lull that usually follows has been even more pronounced. Sales fell 4.3 percent for the week ended Dec. 15, according to the latest figures from ShopperTrak, which counts foot traffic and its own proprietary sales numbers from 40,000 retail outlets across the country. On Wednesday, ShopperTrak cut its forecast for holiday spending down to 2.5 percent growth to $257.7 billion, from prior expectations of a 3.3 percent rise.

Online, sales rose just 8.4 percent to $48 billion from Oct. 28 through Saturday, according to a measure by MasterCard Advisors' SpendingPulse. That is below the online sales growth of between 15 to 17 percent seen in the prior 18-month period, according to the data service, which tracks all spending across all forms of payment, including cash.

At the malls, overall promotions were up 2 to 3 percent from last year heading into the pre-Christmas weekend, after being down 5 percent earlier in the season, according to BMO Capital Markets sales rack index, which tracks the depth and breadth of discounts.

Attempting to drum up enthusiasm, retailers have expanded hours and stepped up discounts.

At The Garden State Plaza, teen retailer Aeropostale discounted all clothing and accessories by 60 percent. Charles David, Cachet and AnnTaylor had cut prices by 50 percent of all merchandise. At AnnTaylor, racks of discounted clothes had been marked down by an additional 25 percent. One dress, originally priced at $118, was marked down to $49 but with the additional 25 percent, it cost $21.30.

But the deals at the mall failed to impress Wendy McCloskey, 35, of Lebanon, Ind., who started her holiday shopping Sunday at the Castleton Square Mall in Indianapolis. A snow storm that blustered through the Midwest this week delayed her shopping plans, and a busy schedule with her children also got in the way.

"I was so surprised. I figured they'd have better deals," she said.

And at The Garden State Plaza in Paramus, N.J., Linda Fitzgerald said she didn't feel like shopping this season, facing a sister's cancer diagnosis atop worries about the economy and the Connecticut shooting.

"It's so hard to put yourself in the mood," said Linda Fitzgerald, a 51-year-old nurse from Yonkers who went out weekend shopping with her 17-month-old granddaughter in tow.

A 16-year-old boy was hit by a car after getting off of a school bus Friday afternoon, officials say.

The student, a freshman at Shepton High School, was transported to the hospital but is expected to recover.

Plano police said the bus stopped on Windhaven Parkway east of Midway Road to let some students who live in the neighborhood off the bus. The injured student got off the bus and walked in front of it to cross Windhaven Parkway.

The driver of a black Lexus apparently didn't see the bus's stop sign and flashing lights. The car hit the boy, sending him flying over the front of the car and smashing the windshield.

In order for the school bus to open its doors to let students out, the stop sign on the side of the bus must be extended and the red flashing lights must be on.

Once the investigation is complete, police will determine if any charges will be filed.

The Irving Convention and Visitors Bureau is taking action after being inspired by NBC's Ann Curry.

This week Curry sent out a tweet motivating those throughout the country to provide random acts of kindness on behalf of the 26 victims of the massacre in Connecticut.

The Irving CVB staff has been planning out the most meaningful ways to pay tribute to all of the shooting victims in Connecticut.

"We are trying to take the characters of students and match them up with some kind act that we can do," said Diana Pfaff, director of communications at the Irving CVB.

The organization is spending roughly $500 to perform 26 random acts of kindness throughout the city. To do so, they have partnered with local businesses to accomplish their mission.

Marlen Torreblanca got her cat food paid for at PETCO in honor of 6-year-old animal lover Catherine Hubbard.

"I'm sad that she is not here and I'm grateful that y'all are doing this for her," said Torreblanca.

As the random acts continued throughout the day, Pfaff said she's grateful to Ann Curry for motivating her to do something positive for her community.

"Her philosophy is, when you do something good, you feel good. And I think a lot of us have felt not very good because of what has happened up there. Even though it's half a country away, we're still affected here in Irving, Texas," she said.

Pfaff said the Irving CVB's 26th act of kindness will be to send a special delivery to Curry, thanking her for inspiring them. That act will be in honor of 27-year-old Vicki Soto, who was an inspiration to all of her students.

A Louisiana man faces Capital Murder charges for the death of a Dallas woman found in a burning jeep.

On Friday, December 21, Dallas police arrested Mark Guida of The Colony. They say he dated 36-year-old Jerie Ann McCloud.  Guida also recently moved in with McCloud and her three children.

On Thursday, December 20 at 8:00 p.m., officers found McCloud's body inside the burning vehicle, located in the 2100 block of Manana Drive in Dallas. The Dallas Medical Examiner said McCloud died by strangulation.

Witnesses identified Guida's SUV parked across the street from where McCloud was found. Police also recovered a one gallon red plastic gas container near the burning vehicle.

Police said Guida purchased two gas cans and two gallons of gasoline prior to Friday's incident. When questioned, police say Guida refused to answer questions about those purchases.

Officers have not released the motive in this crime.
