A multi-vehicle crash killed 12-year-old and 13-year-old sisters and critically injured their brother in Grand Prairie on Sunday afternoon.

The wreck happened along the westbound lanes of I-30 at the State Highway 161/President George Bush Turnpike interchange.  

Police said that around 2:00 p.m., a 2004 Dodge Stratus, owned by Maria Vasquez and Juan Gonzalez of Irving, stalled on the left lane on I-30. The occupants called 911 and were waiting for officers to arrive when a Ford F150 pick-up truck crashed into the Stratus from behind.

Four children were sitting in the back of the Stratus at the time of the collision. 12-year old Maria Gonzalez was taken to Cook Children's Medical Center in Fort Worth, where she died. Late Sunday night, Grand Prairie police notified NBCDFW that 13-year-old Dianna Gonzalez also died at the hospital.

The sisters' six-year-old brother remains in critical condition. A ten-year-old sister was also taken to the hospital but was released.

The mother, Maria Vasquez, sustained minor injuries. The father, Juan Gonzalez was not hurt.

Grand Prairie Police identified the driver of the Ford F150 as Justin Beavers, 30, of North Richland Hills. He was not injured.

Police are still looking for the cause of the collision.

"There was no indication of any impairment from by any of the drivers involved in this," Grand Prairie Police Sgt. Eric Hansen said. "[The] driver of the white pick up truck was very shaken up. He says that he changed lanes from center lane to the left lane, and that was when he saw vehicle and he had no time to take any other evasive maneuvers."

A tanker crash on US Highway 80 in Kaufman county closed portions of the roadway late Sunday evening.

A tanker crash on US Highway 80 in Kaufman county closed portions of the roadway late Sunday evening.

About 7:15 p.m. Sunday, Forney firefighters responded to westbound US Highway 80 just west of FM 460.

They arrived to an 18-wheeler tanker that had rolled over. The driver was located and had suffered injures described as serious but not life threatening. Paramedics transported him to Baylor Hospital in Dallas.

Police and TxDPS closed all westbound lanes as well as the westbound frontage road, which lead to a number of delays for drivers.

Firefighters says the rig was loaded with 7,500 gallons of liquid including a mixture of diesel, bio-diesel and ethanol. A private hazmat company was called in to mitigate the spill and pump off the remaining product.

Just after midnight the frontage road was opened but the westbound lanes of the freeway remained closed.

At this point the accident is under investigation, but initial reports indicated the driver lost control in a curve, ran off the road and partially up an embankment before the rig rolled over.

One Dead In Fort Worth Crash

A 29-year-old man is dead after crashing his truck into a light pole in Fort Worth Monday morning.

The crash happened on the eastbound frontage road from I-30 to University Drive around 1 a.m.

Police say when they arrived, John Lerma was next to the wrecked truck. He was pronounced dead on the scene.

A passenger inside the vehicle was not seriously injured.

Police say the truck was on the frontage road at a high rate of speed. The truck missed a curve, jumped the median and hit a large freeway light pole. 

Police say speed was a factor and are investigating the possibility of other factors that may have contributed to the crash.

Three Car Collision Injures Two

Two people are in the hospital after a three-car collision in Arlington.

At 10:57 p.m. Sunday, Arlington firefighters responded to northbound Collins Rd and Green Oaks for a three-car collision.

Police say a white Mercedes was southbound on Collins when it collided with a small black car that was eastbound on Green Oaks. At least one of the out control vehicles hit a small brown car.

The Mercedes was occupied by a woman who was injured and airlifted to John Peter Smith Hospital. The small black car was occupied by an adult male who was also injured and was transported by ground ambulance. Both are in stable condition.

The brown car was occupied by two men and they escaped injury.

Police mapped the crashed scene and are working to determine which car ran the red light. They are also exploring if alcohol was a factor.

A person was shot to death and run over in the parking lot of a shopping center in the 9700 block of Forest Lane in northeast Dallas.

Police are investigating a deadly shooting at a strip mall in Northeast Dallas.

The victim was shot to death in the parking lot of a shopping center in the 9700 block of Forest Lane on Friday night.

Police said the shooter ran over the victim while driving off.

Investigators worked overnight on the case, but so far there have been no arrests and no suspects named.

Fire Rips Through Dallas Apartments Overnight

A fire tore through a Dallas apartment complex early Saturday.

The fire at the Falls at High Point apartments on Markville Drive started in a first floor apartment at about 3:30 a.m. and quickly spread, destroying three residences.

Fire officials spent Saturday morning looking at other units to see if they suffered any water damage.

Everyone was able to escape without injury.

Investigators have not yet said what started the fire.

Who can forget the video images from Chopper 5 of tractor trailers spinning hundreds of feet above the ground on April 3, 2012? 

No one in Fort Worth's South Hills High School Auditorium on Saturday could forget.  In fact, that's why many showed up.

"Texas is one of the states that has a bunch of storms so I think it's important for the public to know how to identify storms and communicate about them," said Clarice Dyson, a high school student in from Frisco who wants to be a storm spotter.

"We had people spotting the tornadoes [last April] as they were forming," said NBC 5 Chief Meteorologist David Finfrock.  "That's the thing about being in a metropolitan area like this.  We've got a lot more eyes on the storms and it helps to have trained eyes."

The hundreds of eyes in the auditorium will help tell the rest of the story of the storms, which even the most advanced radar may not pick up right away.  We talked to experienced Fort Worth storm spotter Dave Lloyd about that.

"There's a very important component in terms of looking underneath the clouds and being able to see things that aren't being seen on radar," says Lloyd.  "It's amazing they'll show you clips of radar that don't really look very nefarious but there's actually a tornado in there."

It's about recognizing clues in the atmosphere that suggest severe weather is on the way or already here and knowing the difference between what could bring a little thunder, lightning and rain or a potentially killer storm.

Hit and Run Driver Kills 6-Year-Old Boy

Grand Prairie police hope the public can help track down a dark hatchback car responsible for hitting and killing 6-year-old John Raidy Thursday night.

John Paul Raidy's parents, neighbors and friends are still in shock after a hit and run driver killed the six-year old boy.

Ten-year olds Melanie and Vanessa will not have their best friend to play with anymore. 

"I can't imagine that we were playing with him and he just died. I can't believe a good friend died in the middle of a good day," they said.

The two girls rode scooters and joked around with Raidy.

At around 7:30 Thursday night, Raidy, his mother and one-year old sister, Lily were walking home, when police say a car ran the red light at North Carrier Parkway and Holiday Hills.

The car hit Raidy and carried him on the hood for nearly an entire block.

Next-door neighbor, Glenn Grubbs saw first responders take him to the hospital, where Raidy died.

"When I looked over they were picking him and putting him on the back board," Grubbs said. "When I saw his long blond hair, I knew it was John."

On Saturday, a memorial grew near the crash scene for Raidy, who would have turned 7-years old next month.

His mother, Lauren, made an emotional plea Friday to find the car's driver.

"He loved school, he loved all his friends and you took him from us," his mother said.

Using traffic cameras within the vicinity where the crash happened, police describe the car that hit

Raidy as a black or a very dark colored 4-door hatch-back.

Citizens and Officers Hailed as Heroes After Lake Rescue

Dallas Police officers and citizens were recognized after they helped rescue a man from his car as it went underwater in Bachman Lake Friday morning.

The man pulled from his sinking SUV in Bachman Lake on Friday morning says he remembers nothing about the accident that landed him in Parkland Hospital's intensive care unit.

"I remember getting on Northwest Highway and ten minutes later, I'm waking up in an ambulance," said 31-year-old Jason McClellan of Dallas.

McClellan says he was on his way to work in Las Colinas just after 6:00 a.m. on Friday, when doctors believe he suffered a slight seizure and lost control of his vehicle.

Two joggers saw the car plunge into the water, and after trying to free McClellan, called 911.

Three Dallas police officers managed to free McClellan, who by then, was unconscious, by breaking his sunroof window.

"I think there was some kind of divine intervention that happened there," McClellan said.

"I have a new appreciation for strangers now."

McClellan says he has no memory of the accident itself, adding that he watched video of the rescue while being treated in the Intensive Care Unit.

"I was just laying up there watching the news, trying to figure out if that was really me or not," he said.

While he's yet to meet the Dallas [olice officers and two citizens who helped in his rescue face-to-face, McClellan says the joggers did call to check up on him in the hospital.

While he says he appreciated the gesture, he added a heartfelt message of thanks to the Good Samaritans.

"Thanks for giving me my life," he said.

"Because without that, I'd be dead, I guess."

Grand Prairie police are looking for the driver who hit and killed a 6-year-old boy Thursday night.

Police say John Paul Raidy, a first-grader at Austin Elementary, was crossing the street with his mother and sister at North Carrier Parkway and Holiday Hills Drive at 7:30 p.m. when he was hit by a car.

"This is one of the most horrific scenes I have ever seen, as far the dynamics of the crash and the circumstances surrounding it," said Grand Prairie police Sgt. Eric Hansen.

Police said the driver ran a red light that investigators determined had been red for 14 seconds.

The collision, police said, was so powerful that Raidy landed on the hood of the car and was carried 100 yards before landing on the pavement.

"I pray they grow a conscience and turn themselves in for doing this to a 6-year-old boy," said John's mother, Lauren Raidy.

Investigators said the vehicle that hit him stopped briefly and then drove off southbound on Carrier Parkway.

"We believe that the driver is aware of what occurred and, whether they got scared or what made them leave the scene, we hope they will contact us," said Hansen.

Raidy was taken by ambulance to Arlington Memorial Hospital where he died.

"He's just gone. I'll never be able to hold my son again, I'll never be able to tell him that I love him," said Lauren Raidy.

The vehicle is described as a black or very dark-colored 4-door hatchback.

Police released a traffic camera photo (left) of the small dark hatchback involved in the fatal hit-and-run.

Grand Prairie police said the vehicle will likely have minor damage to the front bumper and hood.

Anyone with information about the vehicle is encouraged to contact the Grand Prairie Police Department's Traffic Division at 972-237-8790.

This is the second traffic fatality in Grand Prairie this year.

Grief counselors spent the day at Austin Elementary to help students and staff.
